Dear Jennifer,
We all know that San Diego summers can be intense. Mauzy would
like to share some simple and inexpensive strategies to stay cool while
the temperature is rising. The next few issues of our newsletter will
focus on helping our customers adapt some of these tips on a daily
basis to ensure maximum savings throughout the warm summer months and
save energy at the same time.

Energy Saving Tips for Summer

Use Your Windows to Gain Cool Air and Keep Out Heat
- Take advantage of natural ventilation by turning off
your cooling system and opening your windows while sleeping. When you
wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to shut in the cool
air.
- Install window coverings to prevent heat gain
through your windows. Certain window treatments and coverings,
including awnings, blinds, shades and shutters can actually improve
energy efficiency. High-reflectivity window films and mesh window
screens can help block summer heat gain. However, it's important to
caulk and weatherstrip around windows to reduce air leakage.
Operate Your Thermostat Efficiently
- Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the
summer. You will notice that the smaller the difference is between the
indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill.
- Keep your house warmer than normal when you are not
at home. By using a programmable thermostat you can save approximately
10% a year on heating and cooling bills. Simply turning your thermostat
back 10ƒ-15ƒ for the eight hours you are asleep, will generate
significant savings.
- Avoid setting your thermostat at a
colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It
will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive
cooling and unnecessary expense.
